"Big Search Box" (on the Library home page)

The "Big Search Box" is used to find books (as well as journals, government publications, and other media resources) that are available within the University of Calgary Library system.

The Library's web pages can also provide you with more information on searching, and explanations of library location codes.

Books - Specific Titles

Search for the title using the Big Search Box. Your initial search provides a short list of results in the middle column, titled BOOKS AND MEDIA. If your book is physically owned by the library and is in this list, note the call number and physical location (which may be a library branch, or specific floor - see these library location codes). If your book is available electronically, click through to access it.

If interested, from this short list, you can click through for additional information: locations of additional copies (for physical books), subject headings, publication information, ISBN, etc.

Books - Searching by Topic, Author, etc.

Search for your topic, author, etc., of interest in the Big Search Box. Your initial search provides a short list of results in the middle column, titled BOOKS AND MEDIA. Click on Books / eBooks near the bottom of the column to see more results. The resulting list can be marked, and results can be e-mailed to your personal email account. The Library's web pages can also provide you with more information on searching, and explanations of library location codes.

Journals and Articles - Specific Items

Search for journals and/or articles using the Big Search Box if you have:

  • A specific journal title in mind
  • An article citation/reference and would like to obtain the article

In order to find a journal, search for the journal title. You will need to enter the full title of the journal as abbreviations are not used. To figure out abbreviations, try: Periodical title abbreviations: by abbreviation. Reference - TFDL 1st floor -- AP1 .P48.

Your initial search provides a short list of results at the bottom of the left column, titled JOURNALS. Some journals are also deemed "Best Bets" - in which case you may see links at the top of the left column. Many of our current journals are now electronic-only. Click the "Full Text Online" link to see the years/volumes that are available. If a journal is available physically, click the "Print" link to see the years/volumes that are available, and their locations.

The Library's web pages can also provide you with more information on searching, and explanations of library location codes.

E-books

The University of Calgary Library has adopted a "digital-preferred" collection development policy. This means that if a book (or journal) is available in an online format, that's the version we'll buy. If there's a compelling reason to acquire the print version instead or in addition, we'll do that as well.
