Education - Children's and young adult's literature

The catalogue is your friend

The Doucette Library uses two phrases to make distinctions between fiction and nonfiction books:

Juvenile fiction = fiction, storybooks

Juvenile literature = nonfiction, information books

To search for FICTION by keyword:

On the search screen in the catalogue type the keyword (s):

FLIGHT JUVENILE FICTION

and you will retrieve a list of books that are stories, picture books, novels and some folklore/myths about flight, flying, birds, airplanes, etc. All fiction books have the Dewey Decimal number of 823. Myths and folklore start with Dewey Decimal numbers 398. Make note of the LOCATION. If it says ‘Doucette Library – Picture Books’ that will be the section in which the book will be found. As mentioned above, the call number will also give you a clue, if it includes PIC BK.

To search for NON-FICTION by keyword:

On the search screen in the catalogue type the keyword (s):

FLIGHT JUVENILE LITERATURE

and you will retrieve a list of books that will give you information about flight, flying, birds, airplanes, etc. These items will be found in many different sections of the library depending on the specific topics. Dewey Decimal numbers may start with 629 or 533 or 745 or 598. Again, if LOCATION says 'Doucette Library – Picture Books' that will be where find this title. As mentioned above, the call number will also give you a clue, if it includes PIC BK.
