Map Collection
MADGIC has about 200,000 print maps. Coverage is worldwide with emphasis on Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. Maps vary in scale, date, and theme. Major sets include the National Topographic Series (NTS) for Canada, Alberta resources, and City of Calgary topographic and community district series. Other cartographic resources include atlases and fire insurance plans. Selective finding aids for our map collection are also available.
Airphoto Collection
| Search for Airphoto Sets |
The collection includes about one million airphotos. Primary focus is on Calgary and southern Alberta. There is less inclusive coverage for northern Alberta and the other western provinces and territories. Coverage is spotty for other areas of Canada and there is nothing outside of Canada. Airphotos have been taken at various scales and years; City of Calgary coverage starts in 1924.
Airphotos and flightline indexes are organized in sets according to the 1:250,000 National Topographic System (NTS) map sheet grid (e.g., airphoto set 82 P 40 1950 consists of airphotos taken within the NTS map sheet 82P, flown at a scale of 1:40,000 in 1950). The airphoto database can be searched by the 1:50,000 NTS map sheet numbers to determine which airphoto sets have coverage for that map sheet.
Digitized Airphotos
Approximately 32,000 historic airphotos have been digitized and are available online. Only copyright cleared airphotos (more than 50 years old) can be digitized. You can also search for them in conjunction with the print airphotos.
