Creating Persistent URLs

What is a persistent URL (purl)?
A purl is an intermediate page that redirects to the actual URL in its current location.

Why use a purl?
Internet addresses are always changing; the purl page is fixed and always redirects to the current article address.

Create a Purl

  1. Full-text databases (SportDiscus, ScienceDirect, etc) provide purls to articles.
  2. Non full-text databases (Physical Education Index, Medline, PubMed) do not provide purls—go the SFX page and use the Create a PURL option. If the URL generated is too lengthy, use the ‘create a short purl’ utility (authentication required).
