What is a Microform?
A Microform is an item that has been reproduced in a greatly reduced format, and requires special equipment to view or copy.
Where is the Microforms Department located?
The Microforms Department is located on the 3rd floor, MacKimmie
Library Tower (3LT). The Branch Libraries also have Microforms
collections and equipment.
What is the difference?
· MICROFORM This is a generic term for the different kinds of microforms, listed below.
· (3LT-MCARD) MICROCARD Microcards are opaque cards
· (3LT-MFILM) MICROFILM Microfilm are reels of film in a continuous strip
· (3LT-MFICH) MICROFICHE Microfiche are clear mylar sheets
· (3LT-MICROR) Microforms REFERENCE This refers to our indexes
and collection guides, found in the Microforms Department.
Why is it always so cold in the Microforms area?
The cooler temperatures and higher humidity in the Microforms area
provide an environment that will ensure longevity of our microform
collections.
Can I make paper copies?
From microfilm and microfiche, certainly. There are a number of
reader/printers specifically for that purpose. If you need a paper copy
of a microcard, inquire at the Microforms office. Arrangements can be
made with Document Delivery Services.
How much does it cost to copy?
The cost of copying microforms is as follows:
For 8.5 x 11 inch paper:
8 cents if you use a copy card
10 cents if you use coins
For 10 x 14 inch paper:
· 20 cents if you use coins
· copy card not available for 10 X 14 paper
Note: copyright restrictions apply to photocopying microforms.
Do I get change or copy cards in Microforms?
Change and copy cards are available at the Circulation Desk, 1LT.
Can you copy items for me?
Absolutely. Copying request forms are available in the Microforms area,
just outside of the office. Prices are 20 cents per page.

Can I sign out microforms?
Many items do circulate. They are loaned for 2 weeks and are renewable.
There are readers that you can sign out for the same time period. All
circulation is done at the Microforms office.
