What is a Patent
A patent is a government grant giving the right to exclude others from making, using or selling an invention.
Approximately two-thirds of patent information is never disclosed or published elsewhere (Source: WIPO).
Patent applications are often the first public disclosure of a technology. A Canadian patent is effective only in Canada and is valid for 20 years from the filing date. Patents filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office expire 20 years from the filing date of the first application.
