What is a style manual?

Style manuals, handbooks or guides detail acceptable formats for citing a reference in a bibliography. Their rules apply to term papers, articles, reports and theses.  For style guidelines required for specific courses, check with your instructor.  In general the Chicago Manual of Style with in-text citations is used for the geosciences.

Geology uses Chicago Manual of Style guidelines as outlined by the Bulletin of Canadian Petroleum Geology.

Geophysics uses Chicago Manual of Style guidelines as outlined by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists.
