GOVINFO: Canadian Parliamentary (Legislative) Publications

This guide focusses on a particular type of government document produced by the federal Government of Canada, the Parliamentary Papers.

What is the Speech from the Throne?

The Speech from the Throne or Throne Speech:

  • provides detail on the condition of the country
  • provides an indication of what the government plans to do, especially what legislation it hope to bring forward.

The Speech from the Throne is made when Parliament first meets after an election or after prorogation (ending) of Parliament.

The Speech from the Throne is found in the Debates of the House of Commons.
