Academically Adrift by
In spite of soaring tuition costs, more and more students go to college every year. A bachelor's degree is now required for entry into a growing number of professions. And some parents begin planning for the expense of sending their kids to college when they're born. Almost everyone strives to go, but almost no one asks the fundamental question posed by Academically Adrift: are undergraduates really learning anything once they get there? For a large proportion of students, Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa's answer to that question is a definitive no. Their extensive research draws on survey responses, transcript data, and, for the first time, the state-of-the-art Collegiate Learning Assessment, a standardized test administered to students in their first semester and then again at the end of their second year. According to their analysis of more than 2,300 undergraduates at twenty-four institutions, 45 percent of these students demonstrate no significant improvement in a range of skills--including critical thinking, complex reasoning, and writing--during their first two years of college. As troubling as their findings are, Arum and Roksa argue that for many faculty and administrators they will come as no surprise--instead, they are the expected result of a student body distracted by socializing or working and an institutional culture that puts undergraduate learning close to the bottom of the priority list. Academically Adrift holds sobering lessons for students, faculty, administrators, policy makers, and parents--all of whom are implicated in promoting or at least ignoring contemporary campus culture. Higher education faces crises on a number of fronts, but Arum and Roksa's report that colleges are failing at their most basic mission will demand the attention of us all.

This book presents the research-based case that Learner Centered Teaching (LCT) offers the best means to optimize student learning in college, and offers examples and ideas for putting it into practice, as well the underlying rationale. It also starts from the premise that many faculty are much closer to being learner centered teachers than they think, but don't have the full conceptual understanding of the process to achieve its full impact. There is sometimes a gap between what we would like to achieve in our teaching and the knowledge and strategies needed to make it happen. LCT keeps all of the good features of a teacher-centered approach and applies them in ways that are in better harmony with how our brains learn. It, for instance, embraces the teacher as expert as well as the appropriate use of lecture, while also offering new, effective ways to replace practices that don't optimizing student learning. Neuroscience, biology and cognitive science research have made it clear that it is the one who does the work who does the learning. Many faculty do too much of the work for their students, which results in diminished student learning. To enable faculty to navigate this shift, Terry Doyle presents an LCT-based approach to course design that draws on current brain research on cognition and learning; on addressing the affective concerns of students; on proven approaches to improve student's comprehension and recall; on transitioning from "teller of knowledge" to a "facilitator of learning"; on the design of authentic assessment strategies - such as engaging students in learning experiences that model the real world work they will be asked to do when they graduate; and on successful communication techniques. - British Journal of Educational Technology BJET is a primary source for academics and professionals in the fields of digital educational and training technology throughout the world. The Journal is published by Wiley on behalf of The British Educational Research Association (BERA). It publishes theoretical perspectives, methodological developments and high quality empirical research that demonstrate whether and how applications of instructional/educational technology systems, networks, tools and resources lead to improvements in formal and non-formal education at all levels, from early years through to higher, technical and vocational education, professional development and corporate training. Empirical papers are expected to report on significant research studies. These may report qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods studies and need to be of a high scholarly quality. - Higher Education Policy Higher Education Policy (HEP) is an international peer-reviewed academic journal focusing on higher education policy in a broad sense. It does so through the publication of original analyses: theoretical, empirical or practice-based. The focus of the analysis may range from case studies of developments in individual institutions to policy-making at system and supra-national levels. Higher Education Policy has a preference for papers that are written from a disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspective. In the past, contributors have relied on perspectives from public administration, political science, sociology, history, economics and law, but also from philosophy, psychology and anthropology. - Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics Cosponsored by the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics (JEBS) publishes articles that are original and useful to those applying statistical approaches to problems and issues in educational or behavioral research. Typical papers present new methods of analysis. In addition, critical reviews of current practice, tutorial presentations of less well known methods, and novel applications of already-known methods will be published. Papers discussing statistical techniques without specific educational or behavioral interest will have lower priority.

- Journal of the Learning Sciences JLS provides a multidisciplinary forum for research on education and learning as theoretical and design sciences. - Small FLICS to Big Flips: A Step-by-Step Guide to Flipping Your Classroom Author Kelly, Patrick Barette-Ng, Isabelle Flipped learning is becoming an increasingly popular and researched educational practice in higher education. Current research and models provide theoretical frameworks and supporting evidence for flipped learning. Yet, the notion of flipping a classroom is daunting and many instructors do not know where or how to begin. The (Flipped Learner-Centred Interactive Classroom Strategies) FLICS model provides a practical process for designing flipped learning environments. This paper discusses flipped learning, presents FLICS along with practical implementation strategies, and attempts to answer some of the common questions and concerns when creating a flipped learning environment.
