Common Reporting Standards for Reviews

Reporting standards strive to ensure that research is reported in a clear and reproducible manner. Most are formatted as checklists that may be used for appraisal or peer review, but are also helpful to consult when planning and writing your own review, to ensure your reporting of your methods and findings meets acceptable standards. Below are the more common ones you may come across:

Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: The PRISMA Statement
Consists of two elements: a checklist for preparation of the manuscript, and a "flow diagram" for documenting the literature search, screening and qualitative and quantitative analysis. Most reviews make use of the flow diagram, which is downloadable as a Word file.
