Lab Exercise: Hot Spot Analysis

  1. Open HotSpotAnalysis.mxd.
  2. Run Optimized Hot Spot Analysis (Spatial Statistics) Tool:
    • Input point features: CityofCalgary_OpenData_TrafficIncidents_Archive2017_projected
    • Output raster: ...\HotSpot.gdb\TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Fishnet
    • Incident Data Aggregation Method: COUNT_INCIDENTS_WITHIN_FISHNET_POLYGONS
  3. Run Optimized Hot Spot Analysis (Spatial Statistics) Tool:
    • Input point features: CityofCalgary_OpenData_TrafficIncidents_Archive2017_projected
    • Output raster: ...\HotSpot.gdb\TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Snap
    • Incident Data Aggregation Method: SNAP_NEARBY_INCIDENTS_TO_CREATE_WEIGHTED_POINTS
  4. Enable the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst extension.
    • Click Customize > Extensions. Check Spatial Analyst.​
  5. Run IDW (Spatial Analyst) Tool
    • Input point features: TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Snap
    • Z value field: Gi_Bin
    • Output raster: ...\HotSpot.gdb\TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Snap_IDW
  6. Run Feature to Point (Data Management) Tool
    • Input feature: TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Fishnet
    • Output Feature Class: ...\HotSpot.gdb\TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Fishnet_ToPoint
  7. Run IDW (Spatial Analyst) Tool
    • Input point features: TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Fishnet_ToPoint
    • Z value field: Gi_Bin
    • Output raster: ...\HotSpot.gdb\TrafficIncident_HotSpot_Fishnet_IDW
