While much of the material held by ASC is in the public domain, some material is still in copyright according to Canadian copyright legislation.

• Public Domain: The duration of copyright protection for the material has expired.
• Copyright: The copyright holder of the material maintains rights over use of the material.

Depending on the intended use of reproductions of archival material, there may be applicable exceptions to copyright. These exceptions include:

• Fair dealing for the purpose of research, private study, education, parody or satire.
• Educational exceptions for instruction or examination.
