Citing & Writing in the Health Sciences

An introduction to EndNote Desktop for Windows & macOS and EndNote Online / Web (free version).

About Citation Management Tools

Citation management tools help you collect, organize and share information for research and writing. Most perform the same functions and most are freely available.

Each citation tool has its own plug-in for Microsoft Word. Some have browser plug-ins for easy capture of web links and most have built-in connections to common library reference databases. All of these tools have options for group-based collaborative research.

There are two versions of EndNote:
  • EndNote 20 Desktop version: a stand-alone program that you can purchase and install on three devices - desktop computer, laptop and iPad or an iPhone
  • EndNote Online (free version): also known as EndNote Web. A cloud-based, free product that anyone can register for and create an account
