Open Access Author's Fund

The Open Access Authors Fund pays the publisher fees for articles in OA journals.

Application Procedure

  • AfteOpen Accessr reading the information on this page, complete the application form.
  • The fund is open to graduate students, faculty, staff and postdoctoral researchers at the University of Calgary. Adjuncts are not eligible.
  • Typically, applicants will know if their funding request has been approved within five business days.
  • There is no limit to the number of applications an individual can make. One application covers one accepted paper.
  • Applicants must exhaust other funding sources (e.g. grants) to pay for submission fees before applying.
  • Payments are made directly by Libraries and Cultural Resources to the publisher. Applicants should keep all relevant paperwork and correspondence.

What Is Eligible?
Peer-reviewed articles that have been accepted for publication in the following:

1. Journals that are fully OA
All content is freely available online immediately upon payment of the OA fee. Publishers include: BioMed Central (BMC), Co-Action Publishing, Hindawi Publishing Corporation, PhysMath Central (PMC), and Public Library of Science (PLoS).
2. Journals that are not fully OA, but allow individual articles to be made freely available
These are “hybrid” OA journals. The publisher must plan to make reductions in the next subscription year to the institutional subscription prices based on the number of OA articles in those journals. Publishers include Oxford University Press, which has reduced OA fees for hybrid journals in its Oxford Open program; and the American Institute of Physics, which has done the same for Author Select.

See the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and the Sherpa Romeo list of hybrid journal programs. Also see a list of publisher OA fees.

Institutional Repository
Libraries and Cultural Resources will deposit a copy of funded articles in DSpace. Authors who do not want their articles added to the repository should indicate this on the application form.
