The Visual Resources Centre provides video and image collections and services in support of teaching, learning and research for all University of Calgary programmes, including provision of viewing facilities and assistance in identifying and using these resources. These image and video resources are available to U of C students, staff and instructors for use in the classroom, for review in the viewing areas located in the Visual Resources Centre, and most for circulation.
The Video collection holds over 12,700 titles on VHS, DVD and 16mm film formats on a wide variety of subjects - most with educational public performance rights for classroom use. Collection development is largely driven by requests from instructors. Faculty: See Video Services for Instructors for information on requesting a new title for our collection and for our Video Reserve Services. See Video Bookings & Circulation for information on classroom bookings.
The Image collection holds approximately 250,000 slides and 60,000 high-resolution digital images (with remote access) featuring images of significant objects of visual culture and architecture from around the world and from prehistoric civilization to the modern era - licensed for educational use. Assistance is provided in using these resources in combination with the Library's subscription digital image databases, e.g. ARTstor, and other image resources, as well as on creating presentations.
The Visual Resources Centre Desk is the main service point for these collections and services. Assistance is available on searching the catalogues and on locating videos (VHS, DVD, and 16mm film) and images (slides and digital) in various collections. Orientations to the VRC video and image collections and services are available upon request.
In addition, the VRC works collaboratively with Com/Media with regard to classroom media and equipment services. Sound recordings and selected other AV resources are available from Fine Arts & Audio Resources.
