Tri-Agency Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management
The Tri-Agencies (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) have a Statement of Principles on Digital Data Management that outlines expectations of researchers, research communities, institutions, and funders around digital data management, stewardship and sharing. These expectations address the collection and storage of data; the creation of metadata to aid in discovery and use of datasets; best practices around preservation, retention, and sharing of data; and recommendations for acknowledgement and citation of data, in order for researchers to be credited for their data.
The Agencies have released a draft policy for consultation (the UofC provided feedback) and are expected to release a Data Management policy in late 2019 or early 2020 that will build on the Statement of Principles. The FAQ go into more detail about the Statement of Principles and the forthcoming policy.
While awaiting the Tri-Agency Policy, recipients of SSHRC funding should consult the Agency's Research Data Archiving Policy.
Data sharing provisions for holders of CIHR grants are covered in the Tri-Agency Open Access Policy on Publications (this provision is specific to CIHR-funded research).
NSERC does not currently have a policy around research data.
