Open Scholarship

Infrastructure and services to make scholarship as open as possible.

What is open scholarship?

  • Open Scholarship, also referred to as Open Science, is a set of principles and practices to make research from all fields accessible to everyone for the benefits of researchers and society as a whole.
  • Aims to make the production of knowledge inclusive, equitable, and sustainable (adapted from UNESCO, 2023).

Who can use these services?

  • University of Calgary faculty, staff, and students.
  • Canadian researchers and post-secondary educators at institutions without a local repository or publishing solution.

Why use these services?

  • To advance open research, teaching and learning, and scholarship.
  • To comply with funder mandates, provide a venue for student or non-traditional scholarship, and increase the impact of your work.

As open as possible, as closed as necessary

There are situations and contexts where making research and learning outputs open are not appropriate. Open scholarship aims to balance researcher interests and other important ethical, security, and cultural imperatives. If you’re not sure if you can or should make your work open, please contact us.
