Citation Help

Citation management tools help you collect, organize and share information for research and writing. Most perform the same functions, and most are freely available. Each citation tool has its own plug-in for Microsoft Word, some have browser plug-ins for easy capture of web links and most have built-in connections to common library reference databases. All of these tools have options for group-based collaborative research.

Citation quick guides, created by the Student Success Centre (SSC), can be found on the SSC Writing Support webpage opens a new window. The guides provide an overview of each citation style and examples of how to properly cite different types of materials.

In Canada, copyright exists once a work is expressed in fixed form; no special registration needs to take place. Copyright usually resides with the creator of the work. The University of Calgary encourages access to works while ensuring that the rights of creators are respected in accordance with the Copyright Act.
